Historical Context: Until the 19th century, Dawuro was a centralized kingdom. In 1891, it was reduced to a tributary status by the army of Menelik II. The Kawuka dynasty, reputedly originating from modern-day Gondar, Dembiya, ruled Dawuro since about 1700 AD. The dynasty created a significant state with territory extending between the Gojebe River in the Jima part and the Omo River in the northeast and south, and the Keffa high mountains in the west.
Kawuka Dynasty: Among the rulers of the Kawuka dynasty, Kati Irashu and Kati Halala were notable figures. Kati Halala, the grandson of the King of Keffa, was a prominent ruler who incorporated Kontta into Dawuro, and fought against Wolaita, Kambata, Keffa, and Goffa.
