• Historical Context: Until the 19th century, Dawuro was a centralized kingdom. In 1891, it was reduced to a tributary status by the army of Menelik II. The Kawuka dynasty, reputedly originating from modern-day Gondar, Dembiya, ruled Dawuro since about 1700 AD. The dynasty created a significant state with territory extending between the Gojebe River in the Jima part and the Omo River in the northeast and south, and the Keffa high mountains in the west.

• Kawuka Dynasty: Among the rulers of the Kawuka dynasty, Kati Irashu and Kati Halala were notable figures. Kati Halala, the grandson of the King of Keffa, was a prominent ruler who incorporated Kontta into Dawuro, and fought against Wolaita, Kambata, Keffa, and Goffa.
